In Brief

A groundbreaking ceremony was held Friday at Transcona's "field of dreams" -- the $6-million Buhler Recreation Park. It will contain eight softball diamonds, two baseball diamonds, four soccer fields, a toboggan hill, skating pond, playground, walking trails, canteen, exhibition space and parking for 600 people.

The park will have eight softball diamonds, two baseball diamonds, four soccer fields, parking for almost 600 vehicles, a toboggan hill, skating pond, canteen, walking trails and exhibition space.

"By spring 2007, this muddy field will be filled with soccer and baseball players," said Tom Thompson, president of the East Winnipeg Sports Association, in a news release.

Located just off Murdock Road in south Transcona, the park will be spread over an area larger than Kildonan Park.

The provincial and federal governments have kicked in $3 million for the park from the new Municipal Rural Infrastructure Fund.

"The park will be a major attraction not just for Transcona, but for the entire city of Winnipeg and surrounding communities," St. Boniface MP Raymond Simard said.

Transcona residents have collected $1.3 million in private donations. Donors included businessman John Buhler, the Transcona Credit Union, Manitoba Lotteries and New Flyer.

Land for the park was donated by the city.
